There are a number of opportunities to serve at FBC McAlester.
There is a place for everyone to use their gifts and talents.
This ministry offers a safe and fun place to PreK-3rdgrade children during the Sunday School hour (9:45-10:50 am) and 11:00 Worship Service. Hands-on activities, Bible Stories, Bible Stories, prayer and sensory toys are used to engage and teach autistic/ADHD children who need a free-play environment. Volunteers are need on an “on call” basis to give these children and their parents an opportunity to attend Sunday School and worship service.
The purpose of the ministry is to share God's love and gifts with passengers and drivers of the Greyhound buses. Church members meet the bus on Fridays before major holidays in November, December, February, April, May and June. Each traveler receives a "goodie" bag and a friendly greeting!
The Clothing Ministry is another way of meeting both physical needs and spiritual needs of people in our community. Items available through the Clothing Room: clothing, baby layettes, bedding, dishes, cooking utensils and linens. We help people who have burn-outs and individuals who are in desperate need of clothing. We purchase new underwear, t-shirts and socks for men, women and children. Donations are always appreciated. If you have any of these items that you would like to donate to the ministry, please take them to the church office and tell the secretary they are for the clothing room. Bibles, prayers and spiritual help are available on days the clothing room is open to the public. The clothing room is open every other Wednesday from 9 am – 11 am,year-round.
The Food Pantryhas sacks of groceries available to those in need of food. To qualify for this program, a participant must pick up a voucher from DHS and bring it to the church. After a form from the church is filled out, qualifying individual(s) will receive a bag of groceries during regular church office hours, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.
English as a Second Language
English as a Second Languageis available to those wanting to learn to speak English and/or those wishing to improve their use of English. Classes are conducted at the church on Wednesdays at 6 pm. There are no classes on days when public schools are closed. If interested in learning more about this program, please call the church office and leave your name, address and phone number and Lakie Gillespie will return your call.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) class provides a place for adults who want to learn to speak English. The class offers assistance with vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversational English. The class meets on Wednesday evenings from 6-7. There is very little prep work involved. Currently, the class numbers are low and there isn’t a huge need for additional helpers. However, anyone would be welcome to join the class to help with teaching and adapting instructional methods.
The Coffee Baris located in the church fellowship hall. The proceeds are used to fund mission trips. A variety of coffee is available for a donation. The Coffee Bar is open Sunday mornings from 9:00 – 9:45 am. Coffee bar: the purpose of the coffee bar was to create a tithe for Missions. They charge $1 for coffee. They use that money to pay for product and then the rest is put in account ear marked for missions. And Adult 7 makes the decision on which missions they want to support.
The Jail Ministryserves as a way to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with inmates. Our prayer is that lives can be changed through prayer, a listening ear and sharing God's Word with those in need.
From 9:45-10:50 children are introduced to God through Bible stories, activities and personal relationships. Teachers and helpers easily divide the responsibilities of planning the various games and Bible stories. Volunteers are immediately needed to help with the 2 year olds and in the 3rd/4thgrade classroom.
Children’s Sunday School Director
This person prepares thorough personal Bible Study, prayer and individual spiritual growth as he/she leads the children’s teachers and helpers in planning, contacting, fellowshipping, and evaluating our Sunday School department. Other responsibilities include: identifies potential teachers, helps provide training, encourages and affirms children and parents, builds relationships with families, teachers and helpers.
Worship is provided on a child’s level for PreK and K during the 11:00 am service every Sunday. Help is needed to encourage children to participate and adhere to a structured Bible lesson and activities. Volunteers serve once every 4-6 weeks.
Extended Teaching Care
This is our childcare program for babies-3 year olds during the 11:00 am worship service. Our volunteer team is scheduled once every 7 weeks on a rotation basis and can easily trade for another week if needed.
On Wednesday night we provide mission education to children 1st-6thgraders by providing mission projects, praying for missionaries, learning Bible skills and enjoying various games and recreation. Volunteers are needed for our 1st-3rdgrade boys, and 4th-6thgrade boys from 6:30-7:00pm.
Kid’s Choirs provides a teaching platform for children as they grow both spiritually and physically. Carrie Wood has taken the lead in this area and helps our kids grow musically.
